Pheromones are a chemical compounds produced by insects to communicate. They do that to mate; to direct others to food; to warn others of danger; and to mimic or deceive. Pheromone use in insect management is environmentally friendly and widely used in organic crop production, forestry, structural and stored food. They are non-toxic, biodegradable chemicals that are used to change behavior of specific insects and have no effect on other insects and non-target organisms. Uses of pheromones are to monitor and to mass trap insects with the intent to remove large numbers of insects from the breeding and feeding population and to confuse the insects during mating to reduce future populations. The ultimate benefit of using pheromones in insect management is that they are non-toxic to the insects, non-target organisms, and environment. A pheromone tends to be very target-specific, highly biologically active, and effective at very low concentrations.
IPM offers a range of Bio-rational pest management products. These products are naturally occurring components produced from natural plant extract, microorganisms or reduced risk low toxicity substances. Bio-rational products degrade very rapidly and do not leave residue once they have been applied, which minimizes the impact on human health and the environment. Bio-rational products also allow a successful integration with natural enemy based biological control systems. Bio-rational range of products is safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
